Hotel Description

Old Mondoro is an intimate, simple safari camp in Zambia’s Lower Zambezi National Park. The camp is situated in a grove of acacia and winter thorn trees, strung out along the banks of the Zambezi River and overlooking a maze of hippo-inhabited channels. It is about an hour downstream from its, slightly more luxurious, sister camp, Chiawa. The area is characterized by vast flood plains and open woodland making it ideal for walking and game viewing. Not only does the Old Mondoro Bushcamp attract guests seeking a pure safari experience, the camp also attracts elephants that come to feast on the juicy leaves of the winter thorn trees (especially during September and October). While you nestle into one of the cosy nooks to finally read that book, peek at the grey giants foraging for food with their agile trunks in these incredible trees. This camp is unfenced – expect some wild visitors – and therefore, may not be for the ‘faint of heart’. But no worries, with only room for eight guests in the entire camp, the staff will constantly look after you and has your back.

The camp has four screened-in reed chalets with canvas roofs creating that authentic ‘back to the bush’ atmosphere. Chalets have king size beds with crisp, Egyptian cotton linens that face out onto the Zambezi. But the best part? A large outdoor stone splash tub and shower open to stunning views of the stars and landscape; nothing like cooling off with a bath while watching elephants play in the lagoon. In the tent you will also find an indoor flush loo and twin sinks. Take in the expansive views on your own private deck where there is a shady day bed for those well-deserved naps in the afternoon. Reminiscent of traditional walking safari camps, facilities are basic yet comfortable, radiating pure African vibes. Main areas consist of an open lounge and dining area with 360° views of the Zambezi River, an outdoor boma area and riverside breakfast spot. This is where you will enjoy the most yummy bush cuisine, prepared by the talented culinary staff. Whatever your diet requirements are, the kitchen team will deliver. (Some say their gluten free bread is even better than what you can find in most specialty stores.)
